file sharing external drives on a mac

I have file sharing set up for home and work machines so that I can remote access either one either way. But on one I can access the root and get to external drives if they are plugged in; not in the other. I'm not sure how I managed this, but I'd like to repeat the settings so that both ways I can access the external drives. Is there a way to insure this? I didn't see this answered on the forums.

Many thanks.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Remote Login is checked on the machine in question. BUT, it may be a matter of which users is authorized to go. There are 2 added to the right, and a third that can be added. One of these (already added) is "Administrators". One (already added too) has my initials. The 3rd (not added) has my full name. A bit confusing. I'll add the last and see if it works, then root around (no pun intended) to see what the 3 things actually stand for and do. thanks.
